Icebreaker - Two Truths and a Lie [10mins]

  • Split into 2 groups of 25
  • Groups will choose one representative to share 2 truths and 1 lie about themselves to the opposing group
  • Opposing group will guess which statement is the lie
  • Practises team mindset under time constraint and EI of having to compromise
  • Speed rounds

Speaker [5 mins]

Team leader or external guest will present overview of the workshop's objectives, along with what emotional intelligence is, and its relevance to the group as future leaders.
including the 5 components of EI:

  • self-awareness,
  • self-regulation,
  • decision-making,
  • empathy
  • and social skills

Group Activity - Empathy [15 mins]

  • Split into groups of 5.
  • Will be assigned hypthetical scenarios where there is conflict within a group environment.
  • Group members will take turns role-playing characters from varying perspectives.
  • Discussion afterwards of the empathy required.

Group Activity - Patience and Understanding [30 mins]

  • Construct a bridge as a team.
  • 3 members will be blindfolded, only they can touch the equipment.
  • Bridges will be judged for aesthetic appearances alongside comparative strength.
  • Discussion afterwards of the different circumstances for each member and how that impacted their abilities.
  • Prizes offered for winning groups of both categories.

Conclusion - Discussion and Reflection [30 mins]

  • Team leader asks open-ended, thought-provoking questions to entire workshop.
  • Individual silent reflection following group discussion, students will be encouraged to consider the importance of emotional intelligence.
  • Students write down a pledge to always try and be as emotionally intelligence as possible as a leader.
  • Distribution of prizes to participants
